The Flags of Honor Program honors the life and memory of a deceased veteran by flying the veteran’s flag for one week over the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center.
Family or Friends who would like to honor a deceased veteran are asked to provide:
Photograph of the Veteran for display in the Center’s lobby while their flag is flying
A short biography of the veteran to accompany the photograph
(photo and biography are submitted to the Superior Telegram newspaper)
Flag of the deceased Veteran to be raised over the Center.
(if the veteran’s flag is not available arrangements the honor guard will arrange for one)
The flag is respectfully raised in a ceremony at 9 am each Friday by a combined honor guard from American Legion Post #435 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1091. The honor guard lowers the flag the following Friday. The flag is then returned with a certificate commemorating the event and the Veteran’s name will be placed in the Flag of Honor memorial book.
