Volume I, Number 4
Happy Easter and Happy Passover from the Bong! As you enjoy your spring holidays, think about joining us for some of our upcoming events and activities. With the cost of gas rising, you might want to have a “Stay-cation” and include a visit to the Bong with your family plans.
Spring is a busy time for School Visits, too. Busloads of pupils and teachers enjoy custom-tailored tours and Squad Training in a unique and affordable field trip. Some schools come from quite a distance; recent groups have included Sacred Heart from Grand Forks, MN, and Northstar Community Charter School in Minong, WI. Some of the schools already scheduled for upcoming visits are Arbor Vitae, WI, St. Francis Xavier from Maple Lake, MN, and the Milroy School, also in Minnesota.
We are currently accepting entries in the first High School Essay Contest, open to all Wisconsin and Minnesota students in Grades 9-12. The topic for the essay is “Why is the Battle of Midway Important in American History?”; cash prizes will be awarded for the top essays. The deadline for submissions is May 11. For further details, click this link: HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST or contact Education Outreach Coordinator Scott Markle at [email protected] or 715.392.7151.
Also from our Education Program, the Bong will host our second Duluth Playhouse Summer Camp, “HISTORY PLAY: A living history theatre camp”, from July 16-20. Students aged 10-14 will spend the week exploring the Museum’s exhibits and collections and performing an original play based on what they have learned. Further details and registration information may be found on the Playhouse website: DULUTH PLAYHOUSE EDUCATION PROGRAMS
For the grownups – a special course entitled “Unusual Military History” will be offered by the Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College, taught by Bong Executive Director Bob Fuhrman, and presented at the Bong in our classroom. The course runs on Wednesdays in May and offers a great registration fee for Seniors over 62. For more information and to register, click here: WITC UNUSUAL MILITARY HISTORY CLASS
