Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center

From Twin Cities:

Follow Interstate 35 North to Duluth. Take right exit onto US Highway 2, you will go over the St. Louis Bay via the Richard I. Bong Bridge. Stay on Highway 2 through downtown Superior (Highway 2 becomes Belknap Street). Belknap Street/ Highway 2 will intersect with US Highway 53. The Veterans Historical Center is located at that intersection.

From Eau Claire:

Follow US Highway 53 North to Superior. The center is located at the intersection of US Highways 2 & 53 /Belknap Street.

From the Range Cities:

Follow US Highway 53 South to Duluth. Continue on 53 South over the Blatnik Bridge – Follow Highway 53 South to the intersection of US Highways 2 & 53 /Belknap Street. The Bong Center is located at that intersection right on Superior Bay.

 

Directions to the Richard I. Bong State Historical Marker & Bong Gravesite Poplar, WI

From the Bong Center: Follow US Highway 53 South through Superior for about 7 miles. Just outside of town you will pass a highway rest stop on your right.  Up ahead on the left will be a large weigh station. Continue until the Highway 53 / Highway 2 split. Take the Highway 2 exit and follow for about 7 miles. You will come to the town of Poplar. The Wisconsin State Historical Marker is located on the frontage road that runs alongside Highway 2 (this is Main Street) on the north side of Highway 2. The P-38 now on display at the Bong Center was originally displayed near the marker. Later, it was moved to Poplar School a short distance away. The school (now a privately-owned structure) once housed the original Bong Memorial Room which was maintained by the Bong Family. Dick Bong’s grave site is located in the family plot of a small cemetery located a short distance south of Highway 2.
